“Away in a manger, no crib for a bed….” Have you ever sung this song? I used to sing it as a bedtime lullaby for my sweet children. It is a very pretty song.
Do you know who it is talking about? Yes, Baby Jesus.
Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,
The little Lord Jesus lay down his sweet head.
Precious baby. He was a promised baby, God’s very own Son. Did you know that?
God so loved the world
There is a verse in the Bible that is very, very good to memorize. (Maybe you even know it already!) It goes like this:
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Do you know which verse that is? John 3:16, yes!
God loved the world so much — that means He loved us so much, you know — he loved the world so very much that He sent His Son, Jesus, here to save us.
Jesus is also God. Yet Jesus chose to come here to our earth as a tiny, little baby. I drew you a picture of Him to color. Do you see Him in the bottom corner of today’s coloring page?
No crib for a bed
Do you see His crib? It’s not really a crib at all, is it! It is a manger, a food box for the animals. But it does have some nice, soft hay in it, doesn’t it?
Jesus’ mommy wrapped Him warm and snug in some cloth and laid Him on that hay. It certainly was not quite like the smooshy mattress you might have to lay on. No, but it would have to do.
Strange place to lay a baby king, though, don’t you think? Precious, precious Baby King Jesus.
You know something, though? Something happens to babies. Were you ever a baby? Yes, of course! But are you a baby now? I don’t think so! I’m not, either. ;) Babies grow, don’t they?
And that is just what happened to Baby King Jesus, too. Baby Jesus grew and grew.
He was a little boy…
then a big boy…
then a teenager…
then a grown man!
Jesus always obeyed His Heavenly Father; He obeyed His mother and father on earth, too.
A special gift
When Jesus was a grown man, He had some very important missionary work to do. He taught people about God and Heaven. He made sick people well. He loved old people and young people. He had a very special gift for us all.
One day, some people who did not love Jesus killed Jesus. How very sad! Jesus’ friends were very sad and afraid. They thought Jesus was going to be king, and now He was dead!
They buried Jesus’ body in a cave that a rich man had dug in a rock. They rolled a huge stone over the opening to the cave. They went home to rest.
The people who did not like Jesus were afraid someone would steal his body out of the cave. They thought someone might try to trick everyone and say Jesus was not dead anymore. So they made a plan. They thought it was a pretty awesome plan.
They sealed up the cave so nobody could move the huge stone. They put soldiers around the opening just to make sure.
Nobody could steal Jesus’ body now! Ha! They thought they won! Jesus was dead; surely the hope of His people was dead, too.
Do you know the end of the story? It makes me smile big just to think of it!
Stronger than death
Guess what? Jesus is stronger than death even! Stronger than death!
God sent an angel from Heaven. The angel was on an exciting mission! There was a big earthquake as the angel came down and… guess what? Rolled back the stone!
I love what the angel did next. He sat on the stone. Take that, death! Because you know what? Jesus was alive! He rose from the dead!
He paid the price for our sins, but death could not keep Him. Just like death cannot keep us, either, if we choose Jesus as our King.
God gave His Son, just like John 3:16 says. And that was Jesus’ special gift to us, too: He gave us His life so that we could have life.
And there’s more!
The story does not stop there, either. Jesus said that He will come again. He is back in Heaven now. He is getting a place ready for us. But one day soon, He will come again. He will come to take all His children home to Heaven with Him.
Those who have died, Jesus will make alive again and better than new! We will all go up in the clouds with Him, and He will take us together to Heaven.
I am so eager!
God sent His Son for you, child! Don’t you ever forget that, okay? God loves you!
