Sheila’s “ABC’s of Me”

I came across this idea through a comment posted by (Finally) Growing Up After 30!

I thought this would be a fun way to share a little about myself for anyone who might be interested, so I changed it up just a little bit to reflect the Christian values of the Hasten Home blog.  I hope you enjoy it–maybe you would like to fill it out, too!

  • Dogs: my favorite is the Border Collie, by far, though we don’t have a dog now

  • Instruments I play (or have played): Guitar, some piano and recorder

  • Overnight hospital stays: At 2 years old, with pneumonia.

  • What makes you run late: Not planning far enough ahead; wishing I could have done this “one more thing”

  • Yummy food you make: I like homemade whole-grain cheeseless pizza, loaded with goodies—mmm,mmm.

    So nice of you to stumble across my site last week and leave such a nice comment. I’ve been checking out your blog and it looks like we have a lot of things in common. For one, I’m also Seventh-day Adventist, as you may have assumed if you’ve been following for awhile. You might want to check out my green smoothie recipe too, since it appears from your ABC’s that you already like to eat greens! I’ be interested in that whole-grain cheeseless pizza recipe too if you’d like to share. Anyway, I just thought I’d say hello. God bless as you continue to work on the VBS materials! I’ll keep them in mind if we are able to do one this year.

      The crust recipe I use is a slightly modified version of the Vierras’ recipe in their Vegetarian Cooking School Cookbook. With their permission, I share it here:

      CRUST (by hand)
      1-1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
      1-1/2 cups hot water
      2 tablespoons honey
      3-3/4 cups whole wheat flour (may use 1/2 unbleached flour)
      1 teaspoon sea salt
      2 tablespoons olive oil
      Mix the yeast and honey in the hot water (110°). Let stand 10 minutes. Stir in salt, oil and flour, 1 cup at a time. Mix well. Knead dough in bowl about 50 times. Let rise 1 hour. Roll out onto pizza pan. Poke holes in crust to let air escape, and prebake 10 minutes at 400°. Top with sauce, soy cheese and vegetables. Bake 25-30 minutes at 350°.
      CRUST (by Bosch)
      5 – 7 cups unbleached white flour
      5 – 7 cups whole wheat flour
      6 cups hot water
      2/3 cup oil
      ¼ cup honey
      2 tablespoons yeast
      4 teaspoons sea salt
      In a blender, combine 1 cup hot water, honey and yeast. let stand 10-15 minutes. Pour into Bosch bowl. Add salt and oil. Mix on speed #1 for a second. Add 5 cups hot water and about 4 cups flour. Turn machine on. Add remaining flour, 1 cup at a time. Continue mixing until dough pulls away from the sides. This should take about 5 minutes. Keep mixing for 10 minutes. If you are making bread, form into loaves, set it in pans, let it sit about 15 minutes, until it starts rising. Then put it into preheated 350° oven. Bake 45-55 minutes. For pizza, roll out onto pizza pan. Poke holes with fork. Prebake 10 minutes at 400°. Top with sauce, soy cheese and vegetables. Bake 25-30 minutes at 350°.

      I personally do not use the soy cheese–just a tasty sauce and whatever vegies, olives, or pineapple we have on hand. I make my own sauce. It seems like I wrote down a recipe once, so I’ll share it if I come across it; but basically I do one of two things: traditional tomato pizza sauce = crushed stewed tomatoes + tomato paste or powder + salt/sweetener/Italian herbs/extra sage/olive oil. Simmer a while on low. -or- Garlic “Alfredo” Sauce = lots of fresh, pressed garlic, sauteed in a little olive oil + creamy white sauce (i.e., a mild cashew gravy) + parsley. I think I liked that best with some Italian herbs in the saute, as well. (I tend to cook by smell, lol.)

      Extra pizza dough can be parbaked and frozen or made into really yummy breadsticks, sprinkled with parsley or Italian herbs, a bit of olive oil, and some nutritional yeast and garlic powder. Yum! Pizza is sounding pretty good right about now. 🙂 Enjoy!
