Let’s open with prayer… #MKBibleChatHasten Home
Father, as we open Your Word, we sense our need of Your Holy Spirit… #MKBibleChatHasten Home
Be with us and guide us, we pray. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen. #MKBibleChatHasten Home
Today we are on our 4th Acts chat. Last week, we discussed "Disciples"; today, "Pentecost"! #MKBibleChatHasten Home
Let’s get right into it! #MKBibleChatHasten Home
There is a phrase in Acts 2:1 that is repeated from Acts 1:14. What is it? They were all "with __ __" #MKBibleChatHasten Home
@HastenHome one accord and ha! Checked in at 2 and figured no one showed up! #mkbiblechatKen Smith
A1 They were all "with one accord" #MKBibleChatHasten Home
Q2 Ch 1 talks about praying. What one thing, specifically, were they praying for? #MKBibleChatHasten Home
@HastenHome I am officially here. Let me holler at the others! #mkbiblechatKen Smith
A2 They were praying for the Holy Spirit. #MKBibleChatHasten Home
Q3 Very important: *Why* were they praying for the Holy Spirit? #MKBibleChatHasten Home
@HastenHome Jesus told them to wait #mkBiblechatBrian W.
Jesus promised the gift. "Ask and ye shall receive." Jesus said that, too, didn’t He? #MKBibleChatHasten Home
@HastenHome John 16 contains the promise for the Holy Spirit #mkBiblechatBrian W.
The disciples asked–according to God’s will–and they certainly did receive! #MKBibleChatHasten Home
Q4 Does anyone remember (or know) from ch 1 what the purpose of the gift of the Holy Spirit was? #MKBibleChatHasten Home
@HastenHome Paraclete and comforter are a couple words used to describe the Holy Spirit; I like guiding Light as a purpose #mkBiblechatBrian W.
So they would be empowered to boldly proclaim the gospel to all. #mkbiblechatKen Smith
Q5 What happened when the Holy Spirit was poured out on the waiting disciples? #MKBibleChatHasten Home
@HastenHome They spoke in languages they did not previously know to others who had gathered there for a feast #mkBiblechatBrian W.
Hint for Q5: Acts 2:2-4 http://kingjbible.com/acts/2.htm #MKBibleChatHasten Home
What did it sound like? What did it look like? when the Holy Spirit filled the place? #MKBibleChatHasten Home
@HastenHome Fiery tongues whooshed down IIRC #MKBiblechatBrian W.
It must have been quite an impressive experience–something they would never forget! #MKBibleChatHasten Home
The Bible dwells on the speaking "with other tongues" for several verses. Let’s look at it a bit. #MKBibleChatHasten Home
Q6 Some men mocked the disciples. What was their accusation? (Acts 2:13) #MKBibleChatHasten Home
@HastenHome That they were drunk #mkBiblechatBrian W.
@HastenHome Now that I look it was specifically that they had had too much wine #mkBiblechatBrian W.
@bassmanbrian Yes. Peter understood that to mean "drunk", too, though. Acts 2:15 #MKBibleChatHasten Home
Clearly, something more special was going on here, tho. Generally, the multitude was a bit perplexed & amazed… #MKBibleChatHasten Home
@HastenHome God’s miracles tend to have that impact on people, a mix of amazement and perplexing #mkBiblechatBrian W.
Q7 What were the listeners saying? "How hear we every man_____?" #MKBibleChatHasten Home
Every man hearing their own language. #mkbiblechatKen Smith
Q8 Who was this gift of the Holy Spirit for, the speakers or the hearers? #MKBibleChatHasten Home
@projectpeter There are 2 kinds of tongues miracles. This one really looks like people speaking a known language they didnt kno #mkBiblechatBrian W.
@bassmanbrian I think that is clear in the context. #mkbiblechatKen Smith
@bassmanbrian Either that or another miracle took place in the hearing end… they heard their language in all that noise. #mkbiblechatKen Smith
@projectpeter That is the key question isnt it; is the miracle on the speaking or hearing end of things? #mkBiblechatBrian W.
@bassmanbrian Sure. I mean if 120 speaking in tongues and many thousand heard in their own language… I gotta lean that way. #mkbiblechatKen Smith
That would have been a noise and a very confusing noise. #mkbiblechatKen Smith
@projectpeter chuckling at the directness of your response, I agree sir #mkBiblechatBrian W.
@bassmanbrian I believe 1 Cor 14:40 is an important consideration. "Let all things be done decently and in order." #MKBibleChatHasten Home
@projectpeter And God is NOT the author of confusion, sadly we are #mkBiblechatBrian W.
@bassmanbrian Where do you find the second kind? #MKBibleChatHasten Home
#MkBibleChat -► let your light so shine b4 men, that they may see your goods works and glorify your father in Heavenstephen waweru
@IAMWAWESH4 That’s witness! Feel free to join in–we are discussing Acts 2–Pentecost. #MKBibleChatHasten Home
#MKBibleChat God wants you to witness because of the benefits he offers to those who recieve christstephen waweru
@HastenHome The other kind of tongues gift is glossolalia aka ecstatic utterances. 1 Cor mentions what looks like these #mkBiblechatBrian W.
@HastenHome There is some dispute over tongues however, so careful reading & prayer are required #mkBiblechatBrian W.
Repeat Q8: So who was being benefited (primarily) by this gift of the Spirit–the speakers or the hearers? #MKBibleChatHasten Home
@HastenHome I would say both; faith of all involved increased I believe #mkBiblechatBrian W.
A8 The hearers were really being benefited, either way, weren’t they… #MKBibleChatHasten Home
Do you see how the gift of speaking in tongues went right along with the overall purpose of the Holy Spirit: witnessing? #MKBibleChatHasten Home
There may be some details here that we don’t quite understand because they are not mentioned. #MKBibleChatHasten Home
Peter summed up the purpose like this… #MKBibleChatHasten Home
"And it shall come to pass that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved." Acts 1:21 #MKBibleChatHasten Home
Q9 Do you think God’s people generally view the Holy Spirit as a gift for their own benefit or for witnessing? #MKBibleChatHasten Home
@HastenHome I would say if they think it for their benefit… they need to examine if they are truly "God’s people." ;o) #mkbiblechatKen Smith
@projectpeter Exactly. We each need to examine our heart. #MKBibleChatHasten Home
It is time to wrap it up again, so I will leave you to ponder that one.
#MKBibleChatHasten Home
I would really encourage everyone to read Acts 2 and I Corinthians 14, if you have not done so recently.
Let’s pray… #MKBibleChatHasten Home
Father, give us a heart after Your own heart. Give us the mind of Christ… #MKBibleChatHasten Home
May we view Your gifts as precious tools for reaching out to the world around us… #MKBibleChatHasten Home
Teach us to be truly Your witnesses! In Jesus’ name, Amen. #MKBibleChatHasten Home
Appreciate the lively discussion! Thanks everyone! #MKBibleChatHasten Home
Next wk, we’ll look into Peter’s sermon more deeply. It’s a beautiful gathering of prophecy & its fulfillment! #MKBibleChatHasten Home
Thank you all for being here. Hasten Home, friends! God bless you.
