What is Vacation Bible School?

For some of us, Vacation Bible School is quite familiar–not to mention, dear to our hearts. However, the question “What is Vacation Bible School?” is quite highly searched on Google. So if you are one of the ones wondering, What is Vacation Bible School?, you are definitely not alone!

Vacation Bible School: the basics

Let’s start with the basics. Vacation…Bible…School. The name really says it all, so let’s break it down.

“Vacation” because Vacation Bible School is generally put on at a time when the children of the local community are on a vacation from their usual schooling–probably most often, during summer break.

“Bible” because God’s Word, the Holy Bible, is our main textbook and focus.

And “School” because Vacation Bible School is a place to learn about Jesus!

Who is Vacation Bible School?

“What is Vacation Bible School” would not be complete without answering “Who is Vacation Bible School”!

First of all, Vacation Bible School is about Jesus. Second of all, it is about children.

Vacation Bible School is generally designed specifically for children between the ages of five and twelve years–although, some churches will include children even younger than that in their programs.

Vacation Bible School volunteers

Of course, we must not forget the volunteers! Vacation Bible School is staffed by a team of mostly–or completely–volunteers from a church’s local congregation. There are Bible teachers, games leaders, crafts leaders, registration assistants…and more!

They all work together with two things in common–a love for God and a love for the children He died to save.

Vacation Bible School activities

At Vacation Bible School, the children will get to participate in lots of great activities. They will enjoy things such as singing, praying, studying the Bible (including learning some awesome memory verses), doing crafts, playing games…and of course, simply enjoying the great Christian fellowship with friends new and old–and young and old!

The point of it all is to give the children a taste of what this “Christianity” is all about and to help them decide if they would like to choose to follow Jesus for themselves. Then, when they do decide to follow Jesus, Vacation Bible School gives them a great start on the journey.

The cost of Vacation Bible School

Vacation Bible School is by no means free to put on–a great deal of love, time, and money goes into each program. However, many churches choose to offer it for free as a service to their community because it means so very much to them to offer the children an opportunity to get to know Jesus better.

The closing program

Many times, a church will work with the children to put on a nice closing program at the end of the one or two weeks that Vacation Bible School has run. The children’s families and friends–as well as the local community–are invited to attend this special program, so of course, that would include you!
